KUMU FARMS:  THE SOURCE OF GOOD FOOD FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

Kumu Farms is the source for fresh, healthy produce and gourmet farm products, a place where everybody can be inspired to learn more about good food that can promote a healthier and better lifestyle.

OUR APPROACH- TEAM WORKING FOR A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY

We are Molokai’s Source for Specialty Farming and our crews have been doing this for 30 years. We are a diverse farm that it is connected to the community and its culture.  Our diversity and link to the community have played key roles in our success and creation of a sustainable economy.  We are Hawaii’s only exporter of organic papayas in the State of Hawaii, but before we export any of our products to the rest of the State or to the US mainland, we ensure the produce needs of the local market are met.  Molokai’s Homesteaders even aid us in our production through a co-op agreement to provide us with produce grown on their land.   The heart and soul of Kumu Farms is our workforce of 25 local residents.

KUMU FARMS: THE SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE

As our name implies, Kumu Farms is a source of many different products and ideas.  In addition to providing our customers with fresh produce, we share with them the knowledge about a sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.

PAPAYAS

QUALITY GUARANTEED
Kumu Farms is your best source for these quality delicious fruits, known as the Sunrise or Strawberry variety for the distinctive color, thin skin and sweet taste.  All papayas grown by Kumu Farms, are non-GMO.  To meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for eliminating any pests prior to shipment, these Papayas are heat treated, not irradiated or chemically dipped like others. After this procedure our papayas are ready to be shipped to the U.S. Mainland.

In contrast to the papayas grown at Kumu Farms, most of the papayas from other parts of Hawaii are from the transgenic seed introduced in May 1998, wich is resistant to the Papaya Ringspot virus.  These types of papayas known as “Rainbow” or “Sun Up” varieties are genetically modified organism (GMOs) and no labeling as GMO is currently required.  Less than 15% of the papayas grown in the State of Hawaii can make the claim of being non-GMO.  We are proud to state that ALL papayas sold by Kumu Farms come from non-GMO seeds.

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT PAPAYAS
Papayas are grown throughout the tropics from India to South America.  The first people to cultivate papaya were the Aztecs and Mayas, as experts believe the plant originated in Central America.  Explorers helped spread the fruit throughout the World.  The plant bears fruit and flowers simultaneously, making it available year round with peaks in the Summer and Fall.  Not really a tree, it is categorized as an herbaceous perennial.

THE #1 HEALTHIEST FRUIT!
Papayas contain more vitamin C than oranges, more potassium than bananas, 3 times the digestive fiber of apples, a digestive aid called Papain and only 55 calories per cup.  The entire fruit, including seeds and leaves, are used for purposes of food, herbal medicines, teas and even cosmetics.

Green papaya may be used as a base for soups or stews and can even be grated as a topping for salads. Fresh ripe papayas can be enjoyed ‘as is’ or with a squeeze of lime juice! They make great smoothies, salsa and jam.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR RIPENING
To ripen your papayas, it is best to leave them in a closed box where they are protected from sunlight and drafts.  During the ripening process the fruits emit a natural gas that speeds the ripening process. Check them daily.

When ¾ orange color appears, the papayas may be refrigerated.  Ripe papayas are predominantly orange throughout (¾ to full color should be eaten or refrigerated to arrest the ripening process). Partial to ripe papayas can be kept in the fridge for about 1 week.  The riper the papaya, the better it is for making a smoothie.
